Green Ameiva
Ameiva ameiva
Characteristics - The Green Ameiva’s natural range is Southern Mexico to Uruguay. They are found
in the tropical open forests, woodlands and agricultural areas. They have the long pointed snout, long
tongue and tail, strong limbs and long claws. Like their tegu cousins, they are diurnal, omnivorous
and oviparous. They are also known by the names jungle runner and dwarf tegu.

Requirements - A 30 gallon terrarium or larger is suitable for 1 or 2 animals.  A gradient temperature
of 80º - 90ºF should be provided during the day. Night time temperatures can drop to around 74º -
80ºF.  Moderate humidity, about 60%, should be provided by misting the enclosure every day. Green
Ameiva’s require full spectrum lighting 12 - 14 hours a day. Orchid bark, aspen or reptile bedding can
be used as a substrate. Never use cedar, it is toxic. Some basic cage furnishings will include a hide box,
a sturdy water bowl large enough to hold the animal, branches and rocks for climbing and exercising,
and a securely fitting cover for the enclosure preferably made of sturdy screen to allow for airflow.
Never use a heat rock; it will burn itself on it!  Also only house one male per cage.

Diet - As stated before this animal is an omnivore, eating fruits and insects.  Appropriately sized prey
items such as crickets, mealworms, earthworms, and wax worms should be provided. Prey items
should be dusted with calcium at every feeding and a multivitamin once a week. They should also be
provided with fruit to eat. Adults should be fed every other day and juveniles should be filled daily.

Size and Life Span - They can grow to 14” – 20” and live up to 10 yrs in captivity
